The Cow That Rescued The Dog – एउटा गाई जोस्ले कुकुरलाई बचायो

Spring 2018 when surfing the internet a BBC YouTube video came into my consciousness. The Man Who Saves Cows On His Motorbike shares that in Kathmandu Nepal many cows are abandoned when they are of no use to their owners. I vowed to visit this cow sanctuary upon returning to Kathmandu Nepal.

Two weeks ago while in Kathmandu traveling by taxi I saw a cow on a busy street rummaging through a pile of trash rife with plastic bags – Exact conditions explained by R.B. Neupane in the BBC reel. When communicating with the cow I found out the owners had abandoned her. I asked her if she wanted to go to the cow sanctuary. She replied yes.

The next morning I set out on foot. My plan was to call the sanctuary to report the cows’ location for rescue. When communicating with the cow she told me she was not on the same street as the day before. She would direct me to her location. At every intersection, the cow communicated which way I should turn until I reached the Bagmati River. It was along this river a street dog with both eyes looking cataract walked into my path. The dog was black, completely covered in dust with a graying muzzle. He sat down a few feet from me looking up in my direction. I took several photos of the dog then messaged a photo to my friend Lena Quenard founder of Association Moey. Lena had invited me to communicate with a paralyzed street dog in southern Nepal while Lena and the vet at HART fitted the dog with wheels so the dog could walk with ease, instead of dragging her two back legs on the ground. Lena advised me to contact Animal Nepal, the shelter where Sophie, the dog with new wheels had been transferred – Waiting out vaccinations before flying to her forever home. Making a mental note to look up Animal Nepal and to communicate with this dog asking him if he wanted a home off the streets – I set off on foot again to look for the cow.

Returning to the area where I first spotted the cow while in the taxi, I asked several store owners if they had seen a cow. Not one person I spoke to had seen the cow. The cow was nowhere to be found. Covered in Kathmandu dust, having a difficult time breathing the Kathmandu pollution I decided to stop searching for the day. Walking back to my room I asked the cow if she still wanted to go to the cow sanctuary? “Yes”, she replied – “For now focus on the dog.”

After returning to my room I prepared food for the dog going to the river feeding him that evening then again the next morning. During that time I contacted Animal Nepal, shared photos/location of the dog. Dr. Sunil of Animal Nepal was happy to treat and house the dog as long as I could transport the dog to the shelter. Saturday is a holiday in Nepal. I didn’t have the training to transport this dog in a taxi. I tried contacting KAT another agency who treats the street dogs in Kathmandu –  KAT communicated they were closed on Saturday and had eight cases Sunday – My trip would take KAT four hours. KAT could not help.

Saturday afternoon I had planned to visit R.B. Neupanes cow sanctuary. Arriving at the sanctuary in a busy area of Kathmandu an overwhelming feeling of calmness came over me. As you walk through the gate over one hundred cows greet you. Immediately the man I had seen in the BBC reel came over and introduced himself. Before leaving for the cow sanctuary my friend Sweta, a Nepalese native expressed interest in joining me. I was grateful Sweta was there! R.B., nor any of the humans who worked at the sanctuary spoke English. Sweta translated like a pro! We learned the cost to feed these cows maize and a mixture of wheat is $30.00 USD a day. The cost of vet care/medicine is challenging for this sanctuary. The most shocking fact I was to learn – This sanctuary is maxed out at 135 cows. R.B. originally housed 170 cows in this spot – Too many for this location. R.B. is not able to rescue any new cows off the streets at this time.

While sitting with the cow sanctuary kitten on my lap I reached out to the cow I had seen days before eating plastic garbage on a busy street in Kathmandu. “Thank you for leading us to the dog who you knew had a chance at a home,” I said to her – “My hope is that you and the others receive sanctuary soon.” She replied with a vision of herself looking down at me with a smile, grazing on grass.

Finally on Sunday evening after the sun had set with the help of a technician from Animal Nepal we were able to hire a taxi to take me and the dog to Animal Nepal’s shelter. The twenty-minute cab ride from the river to the shelter went smoothly. On the drive to the shelter I witnessed a cow on the side of the road by a fire in the street – Eating garbage.

R.B. shares there are approximately 8,000 abandoned cows in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur.

२०१८ वसन्तको समय,ईन्टरनेट चलाइरहेको बेलामा  एउटा बिबिसी YouTube भिडियोमा मेरो नजर पर्यो।” एउटा मान्छे जोस्ले अफ्नो मोटरबाईकमा गाईको वचाब गर्छ” , जुन नेपालको राजधानी काठमाडौंमा धेरै संख्यामा गाई लाई उस्को मालिकले बाटोमा छोडेर जाने गरिरहेका छन। काठमाडौं, नेपाल फर्किन साथ त्यो ठाउँमा जाने प्रतिज्ञा गरे मैले।

२ हप्ता अधि ट्याक्सीमा काठमाडौं घुमिरहेको बेलामा त्यस्तो ब्यस्त सडकको  प्लाष्टिकको फोहोर मैलोमा एउटा गाई खेलिरहेको देखे ठ्याक्कै आर.बि नेउपने ले बिबिसीमा भने झै । जब त्यो गाई संघमैले संचार गरे पछी थाहा पाए कि उसलाई उस्को मलिकले सडकमा छोडेको रहेछ । मैले सोधे “के तिमी गौशाला जान चाहान्छौ?” उस्ले ‘अ’ भनेर जवाफ फर्काइन।

अर्को बिहानि म घरबाट पैदल निस्किए। मेरो आजको लक्ष्य थियो गौंसालालाई उक्त्त गाईको स्थानको बारेमा खबर गरी उसलाई उध्दार गर्ने।जब मैले गाईसंग कुरा गर्दा उसले भनिन कि उ सधै हिजोकै सडकमा छैनन्।हरेक चौबाटोमा कताको बाटो लाग्ने भनेर उसले मलाई बताईन। म बाटो लाग्दै थिए उचानक खोलाको नजिक मोतीबिन्दु लागेको भुसिया कुकुर मेरो अगाडी आइ  पुग्यो।  त्यो कुकुर पुरै कालो थियो , शरीर भरी धुलो लागेको थियो भने मुख खैरिएको थियो।म भन्दा केही पर गएर बसी मलाई एक टकले हेरिरह्यो।मैले त्सको तुप्रै तस्बिर लिए र मेरो साथी लिना कोएन्ड, MOEY को सस्थांपकलाई पठाए ।लिनाले मलाई दक्षिण नेपालमा रहेको पक्षाघात भई हिड्न नसकेको कुकुरसंग संचार गर्नको लागी बोलाएकी थिईन, जब लिना र पशु डाक्टरले त्यो कुकुरलाई पाड्र्गा लगाई दिन त्यहा पुगेका थिए।पाड्र्गा लगाए पछि कुकुरलाई फेरी जमिनमा कुट्टा घिसरीएर हिड्नु पर्ने थिएन। लिनाले मलाई Animal Nepal सगं सम्पर्क गर्नको लागी सुजाब दिईन, त्यहि ठाऊ जहा Sophie, त्यहि नयाँ पाड्र्गा लगाईएको कुकुर; लगिएको थियो।Sophie खोप लगाई संधैको आफ्नो नँया घर पुग्ने र्पतीक्षा गर्दै थिईन। Animal Nepal को खोजी गर्ने र कुकुरसगं संचार गरी उसलाई सडक भन्दा अन्तै बस्नु मन रहेको कुरा सोध्ने कुरा याद गर्दै फेरी गाईको खोजी गर्न पैदल निक्लिए।

पहिले जहा मैले टाक्सीबाट त्यो गाईलाई देखेको थिए त्यहा म पुंगे। मैले गाईको स्थानको बारेमा जानकारी लिदा   गाईलाई कसैले पनि नदेखेको कुरा थाहा पाए।काठमान्डौको धुलोले छोपिएर सास फेर्न अफटयारो भए पछि मैले मेरो अाजको खोज यही रोख्ने निर्णय गरे।कोठा फर्किदा गाईसंग फेरी संचार गर्दा सोधे कि उसलाई गौँसाला जानु मन छ ? “अ, तर अहिलेलाई कुकुरको उव्दारमा ध्यान देऊ ।”, उसले जवाफ दिईन।

कोठा फर्किए पछि मैले कुकुरको लागि खाना तयार  पारी सांझ खोला छेउ पुगे र फेरी उर्को बिहानी पनि। त्यही समयमा मैले  Animal Nepal संग सम्पर्क राखे र उक्त्त कुकुरको तस्बिर र स्थानको जानकारी दिए।यदि मैले कुकुरलाई त्यँहा पुराए भने ,Animal Nepal को डा. शुनिल कुकुरको जाच गरी उसको हेरचाह गर्न निकै खुसी हुनेछन।शनिबार नेपालमा बिदाको दिन थियो। मसंघ कुकुरलाई टाक्सीमा लग्ने कुनै उपाए थिएन . मैले KAT लाई सम्पर्क गर्ने प्र्याश गरे , जसले काठमान्डौमा रहेका सडकछाप कुकुरहरूको जाच गर्थे। KATले मलाई सम्पर्क गरी बताए कि उनिहरू शनिबारको दिन बन्द हन्छन र आइतबार आठ वटा त्यतै मामला रहेको  र मेरो कामले चार गन्टा लाग्ने बताए। KATले मलाई सहयोग गर्न नसकने भए।

शनिबार दिउँसो  मैले R.B Neupane को गौंसाला जाने निधो गरे । त्यहा पुगे पछि मलाई काठमान्डौको हो-हल्लामा शान्त वातावरणको आवाश भयो।जब तपाई गेटबाट भिऋ छिर्नुहुन्छ तब १ सय भन्दा धेरै गाईहरूले तपाईको स्वागत गर्छन। तत्कालै मैले BBC रीलमा देखेको मान्छे आएर मलाई स्वागत गर्नुभयो र आफ्नो परिचय दिनुभयो।त्यहा जानु भन्दा अघि मेरो नेपाली साथी स्वेताले आफु पनि जान ईच्छुक रहेको बताईन।उनि त्यहा मसंग रहेकोमा निकै कृतज्ञ छु ।

R.B तथा त्यहा काम गर्ने कोहि पनि मान्छे अंर्गजी भोल्न जान्थेन्न ।स्वेताले पेशेवर अनुवादकले जै अनुवाद गरेर मद्दत गरीन। हामीले थाहा पायौं कि गाईहरूलाई मकै र गौँको मिझण दानाको रूप दिने गरिन्छ; जसको खर्च लगभग $30 USD आउने गर्दछ। त्यसरी नै औषधी र उपचार खर्च यस गौंसालालाई निकै चुनौतीपुर्ण रहेको जान्युम। सबै भन्दा आस्चर्य लाग्दो के थियो भन्दा गौंसाला 135 गाईले नै अधिक्तम रूपले भरिसकेको थियो।पहिले चाहि  यहा 170 गाई रहेको बुझेऔ, जो यो गौंसालाको लागि निकै धेरै थियो। जसकारण हाल R.B नयाँ गाईहरूको  उद्दार गर्न सकेका छैन्न।

जब म त्यस गौंसालाको बिरालोलाई लिएर बसेको थिए , तब मैले त्यहि गाईसंग सम्पर्क गरे जसलाई मैले केहि दिन अघि प्लासटिक खाई रहेको देखेको थिए ।”धन्यवाद हामीलाई कुकुरसम्म पुराईदेकोमा , तिमीलाई थाहा थियो कि उसले घर पाउने छ भनेर।” ,मैले उसलाई भने ,” म आशा गर्छु कि तिमी अनि तिमी जस्तै अरू गाईहरूले पनि चाडै गौंसाला पाउन।” उसले मलाई हासेर घास खाहिरहेको दृश्य देखाइ जवाफ दिइन।

अन्तयमा आईतबार बेलुकी घाम डुबेपछि Animal Nepalका र्पाविधिकको मद्दतबाट हामीले एउटा टाक्सि भाडामा लिएउ र कुकुरलाई Animal Nepalको शरणमा पुरायौ। २० मिनेटको त्यो याऋा रामर्री गयो। शरणमा पुग्ने याऋाको समयमा बाटोमा एउटा गाईले आगोको छेउमा फोहोर खाइरहेको देंखे ।
