Once a year the community gathers for this multi-day event – A parade, elephant polo, elephant races, and an elephant beauty pageant. This year Bidhya Devi Bhandari, President of Nepal helicoptered in for an appearance.
I was asked by elephants to attend this festival, take photos – Setting the intention to bring to light crime syndicates associated with this event.
Not knowing what to expect – The elephants communicated I would receive guidance.
The first day of the festival: Taking well over a hundred photos started at the Rhino statue ceremony. I was directed to photograph and video the parade. After the parade, I photographed my way to the festival grounds.
What I found was a local community proud of their Tharu heritage participating in the parade. At the event grounds, vendors under bright-colored tents sold clothing and food items much like fairgrounds I’ve experienced in the United States. There was a grandstand for speeches from high-level officials and a separate grandstand for high-level officials to watch the elephant games. Locals and tourists were able to walk around or sit on the grass.
I asked a few elephants about their day. These elephants were waiting to play polo:
Annette – How do you feel?
Elephants – Scary. Uncomfortable. Stupid.
Annette – Are you angry about playing polo?
Elephants – No. Humans don’t know any different. Teach them better through love and compassion.
Grateful the elephants didn’t ask me to stay through the games, nor was I asked by the elephants to return to the festival. When told by the elephants to leave the event – Heading out through the gate I found myself ten feet from the president of Nepal.
President Bidhya Devi Bhandari and I left the event at the exact same time.
हरेक साल स्थानिय समाज एक जुट भएर बहु-दिनको कार्यक्रम जसमा परेड, हात्तीको पोलो, हात्तीको रेस र हात्ती सौन्दर्य जस्तो कार्यक्रम संचालन गर्छन्। यो बर्ष नेपाल को राष्ट्रियपति बिध्या देवी भण्डारीको हेलिकप्टरबाट आगमन भएको थियो।
त्यहा भएको हात्तीहरुले मलाई त्यस महोत्सवमा सहभागी हुन, तस्बिर खिचेर- त्यस कार्यक्रम सङ मिसिएको सम्भावित अपराध सिंडिकेटमा प्रकाश दिनलाई बोलएको थियो।
के गर्ने कसो गर्ने भनेर अन्योलमा परेको बेलामा हात्तीहरुले मलाई बाटो देखाउने सहयोग गर्छौ भनेर संचार गरेर भने ।
गैंडाको मुर्ति समारोहमा सैयौ तस्बिर खिच्दै महोत्सवको पहिलो दिन सुरु भयो। मलाई परेडको तस्बिर र भिडियो खिच्न भनेर निर्देशित गरिएको थियोे। परेड सकिन साथ मैले आफ्नै तरिकामा महोत्सवको तस्बिरहरु खिच्न थाले।
स्थानीय थारु समुदाय पुरा गर्भको साथ परेडमा सहभागी भएको मैले देखे। महोत्सवको चौरमा रङिबिरङी पाल टाङेर पसलेहरु कपडा र अनेक खानाहरु बेचिरहेका थिए जुन मैले अमेरिकामा पनि देखेको थिए। नेपालका ठुला बडा मानिसहरुको लागी भासण गर्न र हात्तीको खेल हेर्नको निम्ति छुट्टै मन्च बनाएको थियो भने स्थानीय बसिन्दा र टुरिष्टहरु चै ओरिपरी हिड्ने वा घाँसमा बस्ने गरेको थियोे।
मैले केही हात्तीहरुलाई उनरुको दिन कस्तो बित्दै छ भनेर प्रश्न गर्दा उनिहरु पोलो खेल्नको लागि कुरिरहेको छौ भन्ने बताए।
एनेट – तिमीहरूलाई कस्तो महशुस भैरहेको छ?
हात्तीहरु- डरलाग्दो, असुविधाजनक, बेवकुफ।
एनेट- के तिमीहरूलाई पोलो खेल देखि रिस उठेको हो?
हात्तीहरु- हैन। मानिसहरुलाई केही चिजको पनि फरक थाहा छैन । तिनीहरुलाई प्रेम र दयाको माध्यमबाट राम्ररी सिकाउनुहोस।
म कृतज्ञ थिए कि हात्तीहरुले मलाई नत पुरै खेल हेर्न बस भने नत फेरि महोत्सवमा फर्केर आउन निम्तो दिए। जब म त्यो कार्यक्रम बाट फर्किन गेट तिर लाग्दै थिए त्यही बेला नेपालको राष्ट्रियपति म भन्दा मात्र १० कदमको दुरिमा भएको फेला पारे।
राष्ट्रियपति बिध्या देवि भण्डारी र म एकै समयमा कार्यक्रमबाट निस्कियुम।
