Wild Elephant Renaldo – जंगली हात्ती रिनाल्डो

Renaldo a wild bull elephant living in and around Chitwan National Park has quite the reputation with the humans in Sauraha. He is known to be strong, powerful yet lovable in a non-threatening cheeky way. Renaldo has sired many calves by impregnating elephants at the Government Breeding Center in Chitwan.

This visit many locals verbalized the importance of not walking alone at night – Due to a surge of rhinos, elephants, boars, and leopards coming into the village.

One Thursday afternoon in December the electricity in all of Chitwan went out. This outage knocked out my hotel’s internet. Afternoon turned into evening. The electricity was not restored. My online animal communication class that day started at 8:45 pm. It was recommended to me one of the restaurants near the Riverside had a gigantic generator/inverter which allowed internet service in the event of a power outage. Reaching out to Renaldo I asked if it was safe for me to attend class at the restaurant returning back to the hotel afterward. Ronaldo told me as long as I was back at my hotel by 10:00 pm I would be safe. Knowing the class would not finish until 10:30/11:00 pm I decided based on Renaldo’s recommendation to stay at my hotel. Since I had Renaldo’s attention I asked him if I would be able to “see” him this trip. Renaldo replied, “Yes” – I was so excited hearing “yes” while imagining when I got up in the middle of the night to use the toilet he would be in the field outside my hotel. I’d peek out the window and see Renaldo!

That night when I climbed in bed to participate in my nightly ritual of watching Stephen Colbert’s monologue on YouTube – A different YouTube video was number one in the queue for me to watch. This video was in my queue!

After viewing the video of Renaldo I literally laughed out loud sharing with Renaldo that he was very funny – Thanking him for allowing me to “see” him. I’d not seen that video before!

January 12, 2019, Renaldo accepted an invitation to attend our animal communication class with Dr. Maia Kincaid.

Here are a few highlights of Renaldo’s communication with my animal communication class.

I’d like an elephant feeding site set up at the edge of the village where we elephants can co-exist without the fear. I would enjoy pumpkins. I would stomp on them when eating – This would be a good show!

I visit the village for food and fun. I feel friendly with the villagers. The village is mine.

Humans are not respecting nature – they keep destroying. They need to listen to each other more.

Setting up “Dining Areas” – Many elephants I speak with in Chitwan suggest converting the “two elephant riding stations” (locations where tourists arrive to ride on a saddled elephant) into community gardens! The community garden would feed both the human and elephant communities – creating a different tourism model ending the cruel elephant rides. Here is an article that speaks of an elephant dining area being installed in Southwest China’s Yunnan Province.

चित्वन राष्ट्रिय निकुञ्ज वरि परि रहने एउटा मत्ता हात्ती रिनाल्डो मानिसहरु माझ अलिक चर्चित हात्ती हो। उ बलियो र तागतिलो भए ता पनि कुनै कष्ट नदि मानिस सामु मायालु रूपमा प्रख्यात भएको छ। रिनाल्डोले सरकारी प्रजनन केन्द्रको निकै ढोही हात्तीहरुसङ्ग प्रजनन गरेर त्याको हात्तीहरुले बच्चा पाइसएको छ।

गैंडा, हात्ती, बनेल र चितुवाहरु गाउँमा छिर्ने गरेकोले गर्दा यश भ्रमणमा धेरै स्थानीयहरुले रातमा एक्लै हिंड्न् नसक्ने बताए। डिसेम्बरको एक बिहिवारको दिउसोको बेला चितवन भरिको बिजुली गयो जोस्को कारन मेरो होटेलको ईन्टरनेट पनि गयो। दिन सन्ध्यामा परिणत भयो तर बिजुली अझै आएन। मेरो अन्लाईन सन्चार कक्ष त्यो दिन बेलुकाको ८:४५मा सुरु भयो। मलाई यहाँको एक जनाले खोला नजिकको रेस्टुरेन्टमा जान सुझाव दिनु भयो जाहा बिजुली नभएको खण्डमा ठुलो जेनेरेटर/इनभरटर चलाएर ईन्टरनेटको सुबिधा दिने रहेछ। त्यो रेस्टुरेन्ट देखि राती आफु बसेको होटेल फर्किन सुरक्षित हुन्छ कि हुदैन भनेर मैले रोनाल्डोलाई सन्चार मध्यम सोधे। मेरो कक्ष रातीको साढे १० देखी ११ बजे सम्म नसकिने थाहा थियो त्यही भएर रिनाल्डोको उत्तर नपाउन्जेल होटेल देखी ननिस्किने निर्णय गरे। रोनाल्डोको ध्यान आकर्षण गर्न सफल भएपछि मैले मेरो यो यात्रामा उसलाई देख्न सक्छु कि सक्दिन भनेर प्रश्न गर्दा उसले सक्छ भन्यो। त्यति भनिसक्दा म यति उत्साहीत बएकी अनेक थरी कुराहरु सोच्न पुगेछु जस्तै कि मध्य रातमा टोइलेट जान उठ्दा त रोनाल्डो म बसेको होटेल अघाडी खेतमा उब्बिरहेको हुने रे अनि म चाहिँ झ्यालबाट उसलाई चिहाएर हेरिरहेको हुने रे!

त्यो राति मैले You Tubeमा स्टिफन कोल्बर्टको मोनोलोग हेर्नको लागि आफ्नो बिस्तारामा बसे- कुनै अरुनै भिडियो You Tube को लाममा नम्बर एकमा थियो।त्यो भिडियो मेरो You Tube को लाममा थियो।

रोनाल्डोको भिडियो हेरिसकेपछी म जोड जोडले हास्न थाले। मलाई उ एकदमै रमाइलो लाग्यो अनि उसलाई हेर्न पाकोमा धन्यवाद दिए उसलाई ।यो भन्दा अघाडी मैले कहिले पनि त्यो भिडियो देखेको थिएन।

जनवरी १२,२०१९ मा रोनाल्डोले डाक्टर मिया किन्सिआड सङको हाम्रो जनावर संचार कक्षमा आउने निम्तो स्वीकार गर्‍यो।

रिनाल्डोको संचार हाम्रो जनावर संचार कक्ष सङ भएको हाइलाइट यश प्रकारको रहेको छ।

गाउँको किनारमा हात्तीलाई दानापानी खुवाउने ठाँउ भैदेको भए हामी हात्तीहरु बिना डर र त्रास बाच्न सक्ने थियुम। फर्सी देखेर म रमाउथे। म फर्सीलाई कुल्चेर खन्थ्ये जुन हेर्न रमाइलो हुन्थ्यो!

खाने कुरा र रमाइलोको लागी म गाउँ आउछु। गाउँको मान्छेहरु सङ मलाई मित्रताको भावना आउछ र गाउँ मलाई मेरो आफ्नै लाग्छ ।

मानिसहरु प्रकृतीको इज्जत नगरी त्यस्को नस्ट गर्छन। मानिसहरुले प्रकृतिको कुरा पनि सुन्न सक्नु पर्छ।
